In each Project Etgar unit, traditional Jewish sources are studied as a means to deepen student’s understanding and mastery of core Jewish concepts. For example, when we study the Jewish view of friendship, we read the Biblical text that describes the friendship between David and Jonathan in the Book of Samuel in the second section of the Bible known as “The Prophets.”
In order to find personal meaning from these Jewish sacred texts, it is helpful to know something about the origin, characteristics, and content of these texts. Therefore, Project Etgar begins by studying ספרי קודש Sifrei Kodesh (Sacred Texts). The core concept of this unit is:
In order for a Jew to make personal meaning and find his or her own direction for living a Jewishly involved life, (s)he must first have a working understanding of the primary bodies of traditional writings.
